Vandersteen family chronology

1824, 10 Dec. George Vandersteen born , son of William(1782-1846) and Henrietta May Vandersteen (1787-1858) daughter of Daniel May and Ann Croxton. The Vandersteens married 19 April 1810 in St. Dunstan, Stepney.

1825, 24 April. George christened at St Matthew, Bethnal Green

1841 census. George living in the Tower Hamlets, Bethnal Green, with his parents and his brothers William, age 30, and Charles, age 25, and their 15-year-old servant, Julia Freeman.

1846, 26 May. George marries Jane Ivett Burney (14 Dec 1819), daughter of John Burney, born in Ireland and Mary Ivett, also Ivet. Catlin Historical Society papers say the Vandersteens were musicians and met in a concert hall.

1848, 3 Nov. George, Jane and baby George arrive in New York on the American Eagle with Jane’s sisters, Mary Ann Burney, 22, Ellen Burney, 20, and Sarah Burney, 19 and the four girls’ mother, Mary Ann Burney, 55.

1850, 28 March: Ellen born to George and Jane in Catlin.

1854, 18 January. William John born to George and Jane in Danville or Potomac.

before 1855. Jane’s mother, Mary Ann Burney, and her sisters, Ellen and Mary Ann, return to England. Mary Ann marries Charles Spedding in that year, and later Ellen marries Richard Ware. The Wares are living with Mary Ann in the English census of 1861. Unclear about sister Sarah.

1860. US Census shows George, Jane and their children living in Catlin, with George working as a carpenter.

1864. Jane’s sister Mary Ellen Burney Spedding comes to Catlin with her husband Charles and possibly their son. The family were good singers and they helped with a concert of the purchase of the first organ in the Methodist Church in Catlin. The concert netted $200 of the $300. This is according to papers in the Catlin Historical Society.

1871 28 May. son George, a carriage maker or cabinet maker, marries Agnes M. Faulds( 1849-1933)

1876, 23 December. Ellen marries Clark Phetteplace (1850 -1924)

1877, 29 Aug. George returned to England to fetch his older brother, William John, born 25 Feb 1811, whose occupation was a weaver or a silk manufacturer. They arrive in New York on this date on the passenger ship Algeria.

1878. son George is naturalized.

Oct. 6, 1880 younger William J. Vandersteen marries Minnie J. Tesch in Vermilion.

1880 Mary Ann Vandersteen marries Charles C. Church.

1882, 29 Aug. William, the elder George’s older brother, died at age 71 in Danville. Burial: Oakridge Cemetery.

1885. South Dakota territory census shows William John has gone to live with his brother George in South Dakota.

1895. son George dies in Huron, Beadle County, South Dakota and is buried in Riverside Cemetery.

1900. father George, a widower, is living in Sharon, Mississippi with daughter Ellen Phetteplace

1907, 12 May. father George died in Danville.

1923, 7 June. Ellen Vandersteen Phetteplace dies in Danville.
